Year 6 trip to Tolmeitha
On Monday, 4th March Year Six were lucky enough to be taken on a field trip to Tolmeitha. This was an ideal opportunity for them to see at first hand some of the history of Ancient Greece and Libya, which they have been learning about this year in school. We left in the morning and as soon as we arrived, had a snack. Dr Ahmad Saad Emrage and hsi colleague, Mr Farag, first showed us around the exhibits in the Museuem. We were interested to learn that some of the artefacts had been discovered recently, following the disastrous floods. The mosaics were of great interest as the children had attempted to make their own in Art lessons. We were told that many of the statues were headless because they had been removed at the end of the Second World War! We next went out of the museum and started our long walk around the site. It is in a beautiful spot with the sea to the north and mountains to the south. We saw many different buildings, some ancient and others more 'modern'. We learnt about the Greeks and Romans and saw how their houses were built and decorated. We saw where there had been a Roman arena, where there was a small theatre and also a church. We went down into the cisterns where it was still muddy from the floods, even after all these months. This is an amazing work of engineering. We eventually stopped at the public baths to eat lunch before moving back to the bus and our journey home. Dr Ahmad told us that the area, including the museum need a great deal of work and money in order to maintain the site. There are still many undiscovered relics there. If you have a chance to visit, please do. This is part of the heritage of Libya and should be preserved as much as possible. We certainly enjoyed ourselves and thank our guides for their time and assistance in helping us to understand more about the history of this country.
