Then and Now
The British School had its first home in 1958 in the Benghazi Station and the Station Master's house.
From 1970, possibly earlier, to 1989 it was located in two/three villas in Belaoun.
Mr. David Jones took over from Mrs. Daphne Swan, the deputy head teacher at the time, in 1971 and helped develop the school in times of change up to 1974. Mr. Elfyn Thomas took over the headship in 1974 and stayed to 1989.
The school moved to a new building only a block away in Belaun in 1989, where we stayed to 2006 with headmasters Judy Hardy, Tony Ottway, Sarah White, Chris Peedell, Marilyn Ferguson and Anthony McQuiggan.
Today we are in a purpose-built building provided by the Greek Community on the same site as the Benghazi European School, our secondary partner. We had up to some 150 students from Nursery to Year 6 up to 2011, but the numbers are now at some 100 students. It is however the ambition of the school to continue the proud heritage of the BSB.
You will find much more on the history under the picture gallery of "school pictures" on this website.
